Two Shot And Killed In Florence During Riot
Prison guards emptied their weapons from three watchtowers in efforts to stop a massive fight sparked by white supremacist inmates at a Florence prison Sunday, according to a state lawmaker with sources inside the facility.
Two inmates killed in the fighting died of gunshots, indicating they were shot by guards, said Rep. Buffie McFadyen, a Democrat from Pueblo West. McFadyen, however, emphasized her information was "unofficial."
"I'm hearing three towers might have emptied their ammunition; that doesn't mean those (shots) all went on (prison) yard, and they could have been lethal or non-lethal," McFadyen said. "If each tower has 120 rounds, you empty three, you're looking at closer to 360 rounds."
U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials released no additional information this morning, and a spokeswoman wouldn't comment on McFadyen's statements.
As many as 100 inmates were involved, and five were transported to local hospitals with injuries. No staff members were injured, according to Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley.

In society its murder to shoot an unarmed person. How come prison guards can shoot unarmed inmates already locked in walls covered by razor wire. They werent going anywhere.
It would seem to me that your prison system needs a complete overhaul starting with the segregation of, non-violent inmates from the violent.djw
unarmed? who was unarmed? Inmates attack and try to kill each other every day with THEIR weapons...If you think the inmates were not using weapons on each other while fighting then you are crazy....Also, we live in MODERN SOCIETY and although there are many things which would be better in the prison system if they were changed...Allowing inmates to attack and kill each other or possibly staff is not one of those things...I guess you think they should have just let the inmates take over the entire institution ...sorry...it doesn't work that way...and NEVER will...
I would invite anyone who thinks that inmates are victims of anything but their own predatory nature, to come tour a prison in any state. If that doesn't satisfy you, get a job in a prison and see for yourself how these vermin behave. Every state's prison mission is the protection of ALL life. If an inmate is causing harm to another inmate or staff member, guards are required by law and common decency to value the sanctity of life. No matter whose life it may be. Sometimes lethal force must be used because an inmate has raised the level of the use of force options available to a guard. Go take a penological class and get informed before spouting your mouth off.
