Heroin Deaths Up in Boulder

The more we criminalize drug use, the farther underground people will go. People are afraid to ask for help when they believe that they are going to be arrested.

"For fear of being caught with a Schedule I drug, people don't call for help on an overdose," he said. "Our message is that if people are shot up, get them medical attention first and don't worry about the legal culpability."

He said law enforcement is far more concerned with catching the heroin sellers and distributors in the county. Just last week, the task force formally applied for grants valued at $134,000 to cover detectives' overtime and to pay for "buy money" used in undercover narcotics purchases, among other costs.
