53 People Sickened At Jeffco Jail

DENVER POST - Public health and sheriff's officials are investigating what caused a gastrointestinal illness that has struck at least 53 inmates at Jefferson County Jail, including nine who were treated at hospitals. One inmate remains hospitalized.

"We have an inkling, but we don't have a definite diagnosis," Dr. Mark Johnson, executive director of Jefferson County Public Health and Environment said of the "small outbreak" that began Friday. "We're leaning toward foodborne illness, based on the symptoms."

While the investigation continues, inmates who have been transferred to other facilities and those who have been released are being notified of the situation. All inmates who leave the Jeffco jail for court appearances, visitation and work release are being required to wash their hands.

The sickened inmates have been quarantined in two areas - one for men, and the other for women. They are being treated with liquids, medication and some with intravenous fluids.
