Denver police chief says he would resign if new mayor wants him to - The Denver Post A day after five candidates for mayor promised to remove Denver Police Chief Gerald Whitman from his job, the chief said he will step aside if that is what the new mayor wants. "It's not about what's good for me; it's about what's good for the city," Whitman said Thursday. The mayoral race has begun to focus on community concerns over the Police Department's excessive-force cases and the lengthy disciplinary process for officers. The chief, a 29-year veteran, has identified several internal candidates who could succeed him, said his spokesman, Lt. Matt Murray. "The selection is up to the mayor," Murray said. Whitman declined to identify who the internal picks could be, but insiders say Deputy Chief John Lamb and Division Chief Tracie Keesee are contenders. Lamb said he is focused solely on managing the department's budget. "I am flattered and humbled to hear that my name would be discussed for this position," Lamb said. "At this point, I support this current administration and am doing the job that I have been appointed to do." Keesee did not return a call for comment. Mayoral candidates Michael Hancock, Chris Romer and James Mejia all said if elected, they would consider internal candidates as well as conduct a national search.
