Our mission is to reverse the trend of mass incarceration in Colorado. We are a coalition of nearly 7,000 individual members and over 100 faith and community organizations who have united to stop perpetual prison expansion in Colorado through policy and sentence reform.

FAMM Members on CBS and CNN Tonight

CBS and CNN feature FAMM members

Tonight’s CBS Evening News will feature a segment on the U.S. Supreme Court’s hearings on two drug cases that address how much discretion judges are allowed to have under the federal sentencing guidelines, including crack cocaine cases.

FAMM members DeJarion Echols and Sharvonne McKinnon will put the “human face” on the issue through their stories. Both Echols and McKinnon were sentenced under harsh federal mandatory sentencing laws for their involvement in crack cocaine cases. FAMM assisted CBS producers in identifying their stories and helped set up interviews. Echols’s mother Djuana Echols and partner Crystal Garcia were interviewed by CBS in Waco, Texas.

CBS Evening News with Katie Couric airs nationally on CBS, usually between 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Check your local listings for the air time in your area.

CNN will air a segment featuring an interview with Karen Garrison, FAMM’s office assistant for over four years, today between 5:00 and 6:00 ET, to emphasize the personal impact that the crack-powder cocaine sentencing disparity has had on families through the United States.

Karen’s twin sons, Lawrence and Lamont, have each served 10 years of 15½ and 19½ year sentences, respectively, for a federal cocaine conspiracy. Since their arrest and sentencing, Karen has been advocating for drug sentencing reform both through her employment at FAMM and independently. Tune into CNN TV today to hear the facts!
