El Paso County Inmates Let Themselves Out

COLORADO SPRINGS — Inmates at the El Paso County Jail have been using paper and Saran Wrap to open their cell doors.

Sheriff Terry Maketa showed an 8-minute video to county commissioners Monday that showed how the inmates freed themselves from their cells but not from their pods. The video is a re-enactment used to train deputies.

"We had one inmate, it was time for him to do his video visitation, so he let himself out to go do it," said Dennis Hisey, chairman of the board of county commissioners.

In another instance, Hisey said, a couple of inmates got out of their cell, went to another cell, jimmied that lock and assaulted another inmate.

Lt. Lari Sevene, spokeswoman for the sheriff, said inmates have popped locks four times in the past six weeks.

Inmates also have torn teeth from a comb and used the plastic to keep the deadbolt from completely engaging.

The problem, Maketa said, is that the jail has too many high-risk inmates in a medium-security facility. The county closed its high-security facility in 2005 because of safety concerns. That facility housed 300 to 400 inmates.

this is stuff that happens at all jails and prisons,i know we use to do it in adams county and in d.r.d.c. so who is he foolin with this stuff ,the cops need to get up off there fat asses and supervise instead of sit around and bullshit and talk on the phone ,this is all they did in facilitys i was in ,nobody cares and i guarantee you they dont need a new jail to stop this kind of stuff ,d.r.d.c. is a maximum security facility and it goes on there daily so it has nothing to do with the facility itself....charlie

In medium to low security DOC prisons the prisoners have keys to their own "house". Jails and prisons have to be a carrot and stick approach for proper management. Unfortunately the system of classification is just as bad as the private sector, where those that kiss up to those guards that abuse the system get the rewards or get misclassified into 23 hours a day solitary confinement at CSP. Unfortunately we are now building a $140M new CSP II that is totally not needed and will house more misclassified "dangerous" prisoners to satisfy the republicans. The DOC, by it's own statistics needs major reform and less expensive drug and mental rehab community based corrections, but the DOC is returning that money, unused.
The fact that most prisons and jails are NOT run like the reality TV show "jail", should be no surprise to intelligent people.
