Weld Grand Jury Clears Parolee Vote

If passed, SB 83 would allow people who are on parole to vote.

A Weld County grand jury cleared a parolee who voted in the Dacono general election last year and workers at the Weld County Clerk and Recorder’s Office who counted the vote, according to a report released Friday.

On Dec. 20, County Clerk and Recorder Steve Moreno confirmed that his staff counted a vote from Jon Carlson, 41, who was on parole for a felony marijuana-cultivation conviction. By state law, felons in prison or on parole are ineligible to vote.

The grand jury “determined that there was not probable cause to believe that a crime was committed during the voting, counting of votes or the certification of the election,” according to the grand jury report.

Carlson is the son of Dacono Mayor Wade Carlson. His vote could have made the difference in the election, though there’s no way of knowing how he voted.
